Witan 2s vs Whitgiftians

Off the back of a 3 match winning run, our early Division 1 South pace setters headed into Saturdays crunch fixture by welcoming back top tackler and Brian Clough lookalike Archie to the fold for the game against Whitgiftians, who were also flying high in the league.

The home of football, Barn Elms, was in as good a condition as you’ll ever see it, so it was still covered in goose excrement and Witan set the early pace with midfield enforcers Shoey Louis and Archie (Sharchie) joined by the cultured Dave. Dave actually remarked how little fun he had in the 2s, what a great set of lads it used to be and that he would love to line up for 1s with his good friend and formers 2s legend Josh in the future.

Tiny Nick, now off penalty duty, and free from his previous groin troubles, was playing like a man who had trained for a marathon he didn’t actually run, bursting in behind on many an occasion. Then, after managing to string together 5 passes for only the second or third time this season, Wrighty swazzed a corner straight to Louis who volleyed home for the first goal. In the second half, Witan continued to exert pressure and when Jake slipped in Jesse down the right, he coolly finished into the bottom corner like a young and hairier Michael Owen.

Later in the game, Jake, chased down the keeper and had a chance for a third goal, but clearly frustrated at not being the fastest player on the pitch for the first time in his life, scythed down their centre back rather than trying to tap the ball home resulting in a booking for a ‘dangerous assault’.

After a quick game of rock, paper, scissors (which is what most top tier sides do to decide on set pieces takers) Tony hit the bar with a late free kick.

Divakar, relieved to be away from the pitch 7 nettles, made a great stop with 10 minutes left to preserve the clean sheet and deliver some serious fantasy bonus points for a team with one of the leakiest defences in the league last season.

Man of the Match went to Divakar, Witan’s Superstar, for his clean sheet heroics. Haddock went to Wrighty for a moment of madness and loss of composure that lead to a complete air kick. Haddock shout outs for Jelliot for stealing captains armband and Phill for an impassioned ‘what am I supposed to do?!’ rant at the lads when he did exactly what he was supposed to do and tackled an opposition striker.

Four from four for the Witan 2s, as the lead atop the Division 1 South league extends to five points. The Blues
