Witan 1s get off the mark with a Welsh spanking!

The “W” in Witan on this day stood for a “Win” (and fortunately not Welsh) as the 1s took their first victory of the season against the London Welsh Club! On quite possibly the nicest day London has seen for an October ever the 1s very much early and on time for once (courtesy of Ben’s initiative to get everyone there at 12:30 for a 2pm kick off) entered the locker room and the spirits were high. Unfortunately, what was not high was the count for shorts as somehow the 1s bag was depleted on that front (blame goes to Mike as he was in charge of the kit this week). As those that could got dressed and left the locker room Marcel saw it fit to absolutely destroy the toilet (more on that later).

Due to our early arrival, we got started with the most in dept and longest warm up Witan has ever seen. Ben took the team through various drills, stretching, keep away training, it seemed like the 1s were going to have a full on training session before the match even begun as the match on the pitch was delayed due to injury and thus delayed our kick off further.

The extensive warm up didn’t seem to do much for Witan as the match got on with a seemingly sluggish start from both ends. To the pain of all at around 15 minutes the Welshmen took the lead with Jackson making a solid tackle, but it rolled straight to their striker who was able to finish it and put themselves up. As Witan dug in and didn’t let the match slip Bangers was on a mission. He got into a variety of good positions to cross and make a difference but ultimately fucked it in the end (his words, not mine). Mikey Savage who indeed was an animal on the wing running circles around the Welsh started a good chance towards the end of the half for Witan by taking it out wide then cutting it back to Bangers who rolled it on to Deybson who then shot from the edge of the box with the keeper then spilling it out for a corner.

Not much action beyond that in the first half and Witan went to the side line down 1-0. The second half is where things changed, super sub Marcel brought the energy and around 52 minutes he took the ball out wide on the right and got a delicious cross into the centre right for Deybson to slot it home with an even more delicious volley past the keeper. The goals didn’t stop there as a few minutes later around the 56th Deybson again showed us how it is done and took it upon himself to get a nicely won ball by Jack who hassled the defender, waltzed around the keeper and took Witan to the promise land up 2-1.

Witan were on the charge, but the Welsh got one back in around the 60th minute as from a drilled corner the striker lost his marker and slotted it bottom corner, past hologram Jon. Witan responded a bit later with, you wouldn’t believe it, a SET PIECE! Criminal keeping allowed for Mathaeus to bang one in low and to the left from a well-earned free kick by Jack just outside the box. After that there were notable shout outs for a great run by Mattheus to beat the whole team only to hit the ball over the goal once he got close, Mikey Savage tearing it up on the left side of the pitch, Connor who made his debut having some solid defending in the back and making Diva’s life much easier who also himself made some nice saves and kept Witan well in this match.

Finally, after some good play by both sides Jack put the icing on the cake by getting the ball and seeing the defender turn the wrong way, then with his new super speedy boots he ran it down to the goal and cooly finished it home. Witan up 4-2 and that my friends was game.

However it doesn’t end there. Now for the most notable moment in the match….at say around the 88th minute Jon gets pushed over in our box and draws a foul but gets cramp. Ben signals Deybson to come on the pitch who responds (in his full track suit/casual clothes) by waving his hands to the side and pointing at his full jeans and Witan Jacket top. Gave us all a nice moment to remember another player that gave the same vibe and that was Tevez for City against Bayern all those years ago. Debyson did his work and clocked out for the day, can you blame him? Well we did and he was voted MOTM as well as the Haddock for the day. This then left Witan to dig deep and defend for the last few minutes while the match played out.

In the end Witan got the well deserved victory and we all hope this trend will continue with the rest of the matches ahead and not have any of us drop any more shits like the one Marcel did pre match (might still be there tbh).
